Seeing HubSpot next to WhatsApp is not the same as logging the chat

5 min read Stephen van der Heijden Product Thinking

I have watched the same demo a dozen times this year. WhatsApp Web on the left. A HubSpot sidebar on the right. Deals. Properties. Owner. A green checkmark that says the contact matched. The crowd nods because it looks like HubSpot WhatsApp sync. It is not.

Seeing HubSpot next to WhatsApp is not the same as logging the chat.

A whole wave of WhatsApp HubSpot Chrome extension products now sell that sidebar as the product. Some even advertise that they never read or sync messages, as if privacy theatre and CRM honesty were the same virtue. Fair enough if your only goal is to glance at a deal stage while you type. That is not HubSpot WhatsApp conversation history. If the words never land on the timeline, the company still does not have the thread.

The pretty pane and the empty timeline

I keep a fictional handoff in my head. Call him Marco. He owns the account for three weeks of WhatsApp back and forth: discount talk, a competitor mention, the customer’s “we need this live before month end” that never became a note. Marco goes on leave. Priya picks up the deal. She opens HubSpot, sees the contact, sees the deal amount, sees a sidebar that would have looked great beside WhatsApp Web. The timeline is emails and a meeting two sprints ago. The real negotiation lived in a chat she cannot see.

Her manager coaches from that same empty timeline. AI summarises whatever HubSpot happens to hold. Everybody performs certainty over a filing cabinet with the drawers missing.

That is the category distinction I care about. Sidebar versus logged history. One helps the person currently staring at WhatsApp. The other helps the company after that person closes the tab.

Why native, API, and sidebar-only all miss the same team

Native WhatsApp inside HubSpot is real product. Business API setups are real product. Plenty of teams should use them. Plenty of other teams still sell on WhatsApp Web with a Chrome extension and a phone number customers already trust, because that is how their market actually buys. Those teams need to sync WhatsApp to HubSpot without becoming a WhatsApp Business API project first, and without pretending a contact pane is conversation history.

Sidebar-only tools miss them for a quieter reason. They optimise for the moment of typing. They refuse, by design, to put the messages where coaching, handoffs, reporting, and AI actually look: the HubSpot record. You can sit inside a WhatsApp CRM for HubSpot that never becomes a CRM record of what was said.

What UNOsync is for

UNOsync exists for the Web-number team that wants the company CRM to hold the real thread. A WhatsApp HubSpot Chrome extension that logs WhatsApp messages in HubSpot so the timeline matches the work, not just the properties next to the work. WhatsApp Business HubSpot without API, for people who already live in WhatsApp Web.

I did not build it because sidebars are ugly. I built it because I kept watching good sellers do good work in chat while HubSpot kept telling a cleaner story that was not true. If you are shopping a WhatsApp HubSpot alternative, ask one rude question before you care about UI polish: do the messages land on the contact and deal timeline, or do they stay trapped in the chat?

The opinion

A contact sidebar beside WhatsApp Web is a convenience. Logging the chat is an operating system choice.

If your HubSpot WhatsApp integration never writes the conversation into HubSpot, you do not have conversation history. You have a nicer place to look while the truth stays elsewhere.

Log the words. Then argue about process. Not the other way around.
